Teen/Adult Classes

Norwin Art League offers weekly classes for all skill levels in oil painting, watercolors, and charcoal drawing.

Oil Painting for Beginners to Advanced

Instructor Pat Vaughn and Assistant Sue Pringle

Fee: $12 per week/members, $14 per week/non-members. Paid monthly at first class of the month.(Note:  Additional costs for items such as the canvas, paints and turpentine will be also need to be paid and are available for purchase through NAL.)

January – May 2017 Weekly Classes:

  • Wednesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm; or
  • Thursday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Step-by-step instructions with a drawing to trace and a color chart to help mix the colors needed for the painting. A new camera and video system allows students to see instructor’s painting methods and techniques on a large screen television in the classroom.  The class will be taught step-by-step with instructor explaining what brush to use and when. A finished painting will be available in front of the class for student reference as well.

Advanced students are welcome to attend this class and work on a painting of their choice.

Oil Painting for Intermediate and Advanced

Summer Oil Painting

Instructor Pat Vaughn and Assistants Ann Andrejcak and Sue Pringle

FEE:  $14 per class for members and $16 per class for non-members.  Fee is paid prior to painting.  (Note:  Additional costs for items such as the canvas, paints and turpentine will be also need to be paid and are available for purchase through NAL.) 

Classes are held on Wednesdays during the summer.  Times are as follows:

Morning Classes:  9:00 am – noon, 9:30-12:30 pm or 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Evening Classes:  6:30 – 9:30m or 7:00 – 10:00 pm

All students may paint something of their choice.  We recommend that NEW STUDENTS paint something that already has been taught in class.  The color charts, patterns, etc. already will be worked out for them.  The Norwin Art League may have a copy of the painting available, which would make it easier for the students to paint.  We have 20 years of paint charts and instructions available for you.

Watercolor Landscapes Beginners to Intermediates

Instructors: Elmer Knizner and Harry Lindsey

Fee: $10 per week/members, $12 per week/non-members. Paid monthly at first class of the month.

Mondays: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

Ongoing classes for beginners to intermediates are welcome to attend. A painting is completed weekly using a pattern (if desired) to draw. You may start this class on any Monday morning. Contact Sue Pringle at 724.864.3236 to register and obtain the materials list.  If you register for this class and are unable to attend, please notify Sue.

Charcoal Drawing Class

Instructor:  Manjushree Roy and Assistant Gabby Walker
Fee: $17 per week/members – $19 per week/non-members or a set of four (4) prepaid classes for 48.00.

Tuesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm

Suggested materials for the class are as follows:

Charcoal drawing.

  • Newsprint paper for quick sketches, 16 x 20
  • Acid free drawing paper medium or smooth texture, 80 lb. for finer, detailed drawings, 16 x 20
  • A back support like a drawing board to clip the paper
  • Cake tester
  • Vine charcoal, charcoal pencils (soft, medium, hard), kneaded eraser or grayscale pastels
  • Rag, paper towel, and make-up sponge
